Making your mark & Exploring Abstract landscapes

What a weekend! I thought I’d share a few photos of my recent art retreat in Devon.

Over a year ago I was approached about running an art retreat. After only ever running a day course, 3 days seemed a little daunting! However, on reflection it was the perfect amount of time to really allow my students to really loosen up and get stuck into their work.

Friday was mainly about getting to know each other and establishing what everyone wanted to achieve from my course. I wanted to ensure everyone loosened up and began to look at the landscape in a new way – to see the shape, colour and form. I hoped that my students would go away from the three days enthused and excited about their work!

Saturday was mainly spent out and about, exploring the stunning Devonshire coastline. For a landscape artist, Slapton is the perfect place for inspiration. The ley is full of beautiful birds, reeds and the coastline is just across the road. Beautiful hills surround the sea and all these elements create such wonderful lines that it’s impossible not to be inspired!

We spent the morning doing exercises to loosen up and explored quick sketches, with the landscape in front of us. Time flew by, and everyone really got stuck into their pieces. We used charcoal, watercolours and oil pastels.

Once back at the retreat, we ate cake, drank tea and explored un painting.

Sunday was all about our larger pieces. Again, quick exercises loosened everyone up in the morning before we continued on to some more thought about works.

It was such a wonderful weekend and I found it to be so inspiring. It was an exciting process, seeing everyone’s work progress and develop. It was fantastic seeing the results of a weekends work and I had such a fantastic time with a group of fellow artists. I’m now thinking about running my own workshops from my studio, just a thought at the moment, but one I’m hoping to pursue!
