A New (Weather Permitting) Studio!

After 5 years of being in my studio, I’m having a little studio shake up. However, this shake up only works if it’s sunny, dry & there is no rain on the horizon!

My studio is on a working farm in North Essex, and after years of walking past the many other farm buildings, I came across this one last week – with its roof off! It’s amazing what taking a roof off can do to a place!!

This beautiful old building is in the process of being renovated, but the builders wont be continuing the work until late May (at the earliest). So with the farmer’s approval, it is now my open air studio until then.

The lack of roof casts such wonderful shadows across the whole inside of the building, which has such an amazing history.

During WW2 it was an army Billet formally from a local RAF station (which is now Standsted airport). It was then was re assembled as a Piggery back in 1948 on the farm. It is a wonderful mix of woods, textures, colours and odd windows. It really is such a fascinating space, and so wonderfully inspirational!

I have been in the building couple of times over the years, but it never really excited me. It was a lovely space but always felt SO dark, and rather cold and grim.

But on a spring day, and no roof, it was so inspirational. As soon as I opened the doors and went in, I knew I wanted to work it in.

I have already had a couple of hours in this space, which felt great. It felt free, and exciting, although rather cold!

I don’t know how this will affect my work, but it’s something different, and it’ll be nice to paint in such a vast open space. When you can’t travel far at the moment for anything, it feels so exciting to find such a beautiful space on my doorstep. My gestures can be bigger, my marks larger, and there is no worry of stepping back and onto another painting!

However, I am aware of course that I can only paint in here when the weather is fine, but in a way that makes it all the more exciting. It’s time limiting, and just shakes things up a bit, which is always good!

I will of course keep you all posted on the progress!
